Meryl Streep leads Candle Lighting Ceremony
Meryl Streep helped launch India's Daughter's global campaign to end violence against women with a candle lighting ceremony at the film's U.S. premiere at Baruch College in New York City. In her opening remarks, Streep denounced “violence that is sanctioned by misogyny” and said “Tonight we light these candles to honor the value and the worth of Jyoti Singh’s short, but promising life... She was known as "India’s daughter". But tonight, she’s our daughter, too.” Also in attendance: former UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Baroness Valerie Amos, actor-UN Goodwill Ambassador Farhan Akhtar, and director Leslee Udwin.
