Thoughts from India's Daughter's Oscar-winning sound designer
A lot of heart went into the making of India's Daughter. Resul Pookutty, who won an Oscar for his sound mixing of Slumdog Millionaire, was sound designer on the film. Inspired by Jillian's email (see previous post), Resul wrote the following, and is allowing us to share it here.
Dear Leslee and Jillian,
Thank you so much for sharing your views.... It echoes the sensitivity of a pure soul....
When the tragedy of Jyoti happened, I was angry, anguished, cried in my living room looking at all the horrible pictures and events unfolded... I shouted out and when she died and was cremated I wept holding my own daughter and I thought it could be my daughter tomorrow....I wanted to do something about it..... And then Leslee happened... She walked into my life like an angel, full of love and compassion with this film.....
I was in the middle of so many commercial projects, over committed...or work that lagged. Somehow I was able to finish this film, that was my commitment to Jyoti...I have never asked Leslee, if she was happy with me, I don't even know if I met her expectations.... I only remember choking with emotion working 48 hrs non stop before she caught onto her early morning flight back to London to attend to her husband.... I remember I was fasting for Ramzan when I worked on this film....so one thing I can say with conviction, everything I did in the film had a purity of thought.... I'm happy to see that is echoed to every one who watched this film, my dear Jillian you included..... Your email is a piece of testimony we all yearn for in this society... may your tribe multiply in numbers.... May you have the best of time in your life, May your lovely soul change other people's lives.....
May we Live in harmony with respect, love and dignity for each other...
warm regards and love from India,
Resul Pookutty
